✨ Why New Zealand
The case for going
New Zealand packs two completely different islands — and two completely different worlds — into one unforgettable trip. The North Island gives you geothermal wonders, Māori culture, and the rolling green hills of the Shire. The South Island delivers the most dramatic scenery on Earth: Milford Sound, the Remarkables, Franz Josef Glacier. This is the adventure capital of the world, and it earns that title every single day.
📅 Day-by-Day Itinerary
📅 Days 1–3 · Auckland, Waitomo & Hobbiton
Arrive in Auckland — explore the Viaduct Harbour, climb One Tree Hill for panoramic views, and get your bearings. Day 2: drive south to Waitomo and drift silently through the glowworm caves by boat — one of the most otherworldly experiences in New Zealand. Day 3: head to Matamata for a guided tour of the real Hobbiton movie set — 44 hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn, and Bag End glowing in the afternoon sun.
📅 Days 4–7 · Rotorua & Tongariro
Days 4–5: Rotorua — geothermal mud pools, erupting geysers at Te Puia, and a traditional Māori hāngī feast with haka performance in the evening. Day 6: tackle the Tongariro Alpine Crossing — 19km of active volcanoes, emerald crater lakes, and lunar lava fields. New Zealand's greatest day walk. Day 7: rest and recover in Rotorua, or take a scenic drive south toward Queenstown.
📅 Days 8–11 · Queenstown & Milford Sound
Days 8–9: Queenstown — jet boat the Shotover Canyon, bungee jump the Kawarau Bridge (the original), and skydive 15,000ft above the Remarkables and Lake Wakatipu. Day 10: day trip to Milford Sound — kayak beneath Mitre Peak past 1,200m waterfalls, or cruise the fiord as mist rolls off the cliffs. Stay the night inside the fiord at Milford Sound Lodge. Day 11: scenic drive back to Queenstown.
📅 Days 12–14 · Marlborough Wine & Abel Tasman
Day 12: fly or drive to Marlborough — spend the afternoon cycling between cellar doors in the Wairau Valley, tasting the world-famous Sauvignon Blanc that put New Zealand on the wine map. Day 13: ferry to Nelson and kayak the golden beaches of the Abel Tasman Coast Track. Day 14: fly home from Nelson or Christchurch, sun-tired and full of stories.
🏨 Where to Stay
The Convent Hotel, Auckland
⭐⭐⭐⭐ · ~$180–280/night
A former 1920s nunnery on Ponsonby Road — arched windows, exposed brick, individually styled rooms, and Ada restaurant downstairs. Walk out the door into Auckland's best neighbourhood.
A restored 1880 Victorian villa 500m from town with just 6 suites — Hungarian goose-down bedding, Egyptian cotton, Lake Wakatipu views, freshly baked sourdough breakfast included.
The only place to sleep inside the fiord — riverside chalets with floor-to-ceiling windows framing rainforest and mountains. Wake up before the day-trippers arrive and have Milford Sound to yourself.
Walk through the real Shire — 44 hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn, and the Party Tree, built on a working farm in Matamata. The most magical film set on Earth.
Pedal between world-class cellar doors through the sun-drenched Wairau Valley — home of New Zealand's finest Sauvignon Blanc. The best way to explore wine country, one vineyard at a time.
💡 Key tips: Book the Tongariro Crossing shuttle early — it sells out fast in summer. Rent a campervan for flexibility ($80–120/day) — freedom camping is legal in many areas. Petrol is expensive — plan routes carefully. Hobbiton sells out weeks ahead, book online. Marlborough wine tours are best Nov–Apr when the vineyards are lush and green.
